“But, getting fit and healthy is expensive!”

187743878185781056_3kP4SblL_b“I want to lose weight and focus on my health, but it’s so expensive!! I can’t justify buying Shakeology or a home workout,”

I hear this often…..and I promise you CAN afford it!!
It’s worth EVERY SINGLE DIME.
Why? Because the support you get from ME for as long as you need is worth it!! I’m educated and have experience to help you. Along with the fact that you are making your body healthier every single day…. WORTH IT.

If you break a bone or get diagnosed with a disease (autoimmune disease in my case: Ulcerative Colitis)…. you will heal faster and it will knock you down LESS if you take care of yourself!! And let’s face it…… too many people don’t know how to properly take care of themselves. Let me tell you…. I’ve seen some awful food journals that people think are healthy. #Cringe

Here are some thoughts:

  • Put it on your Christmas list and send those people to me. www.facebook.com/YourFitnessInfo
  •  It is an investment in your health… Along with 30 days worth of one meal a day. You’d spend that on food alone!! Might as well be something healthy and good for you! You’ll stop buying the junk snacks because you won’t want them anymore!! Money Saved.
  • A challenge pack is the same price as a couple new outfits which only cover the parts of your body you don’t like. If you worked out and used shakeology to help with nutrition and calorie intake- you could fit into your ‘skinny clothes’ and it would be like a new wardrobe!
  • They are expensive, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it!!! Buying a house is expensive but that doesn’t mean I don’t think it’s a good investment!!
  • I’m FREE. I’ll help you tweak the program!! And… if you fear committing to a ‘program’…. Don’t!! Use the workouts here and there to add to your fitness! Same with Shakeology! Put it in your cupboard and it’s a healthy meal anytime you want it!
  • You are a grown up. You can afford to take care of yourself and make ONE purchase for YOU.
  • Make dinner at home 2-3x vs. going out and you have the $$. Sacrifice just a little.
  • If you’ll allow me…. I’ll show off your amazing progress (cause you will make some) for you!!! You can be in one of my marketing posts!! #Model
  • I guarantee you’ll buy something this season that you either won’t use, won’t wear, will break within a month, or bores you. These programs last for years. So….. you’ll always have an opportunity to push play & beat the stress of life.

Just shoot me a message when you’re ready to see you options!!  You know how to reach me!!!
Contact me and I’ll send you a FREE downloadable Fitness Tracker!!!
Just print & place in binder — it’s like having a personal trainer at your fingertips!

It NEVER hurts to review your options & see if I have a program that is right for you!!!
And…with a ’30 day full refund’ option if you aren’t happy….. how can you go wrong?

Calories are the sneaky creatures that cause our clothes to fit tighter….. why count them? Outsmart them!

Calories. Calories. Calories. Calories. Calories. Calories. Calories. Calories. Calories. Image Yes, your caloric intake is important….. but it’s not the ‘end all be all’ of weightloss, and it’s DEFINITELY not the answer for a healthy body!!! Listen…. If you calculated your caloric range to be 1300-1500 and adhere to that…. Good for You!  Are you entering every food item into your smartphone & unable to eat dinner because you ate a big lunch?  Maybe your body NEEDED that big lunch, hence why you were so hungry!! I could stick to that caloric range and eat cereal all day too!  Have you ever thought about that?  Just because you stay within a caloric range does NOT mean you are doing justice for your body.  I pity your heart muscle…and well, all your muscles to be honest. It is true – there should be a deficit in the number of calories to create weight loss.  But, strictly counting your calories isn’t the answer.  There are MANY methods to eating that create weight loss.  Have you heard of the ‘Zig Zag Method?’  I’ve taught it in a few of my challenge/accountability groups on facebook.   Point being……. The same caloric intake every day is NOT good…… especially when you shoving your face with junk and don’t even know it!! Instead of ‘calories’ let’s focus on your NUTRITION and CHOICES!  Have you eaten ANY fruit today???  How about a vegetable??  Did you include protein in that last snack/meal? Before I took nutrition courses, I would go the entire day and think….. “What vegetable did I eat today?”  (And, no…..the tomato & wilted lettuce on your fast food burger doesn’t count).  We go through our entire day eating and yet make TONS of food mistakes!! People don’t know how to feed their bodies!!  Does any of the below points sound familiar?

  •  We are addicted to ‘sweet’ foods (thank you, Mr. Food Companies)!
  •  We think ‘low fat/low sugar’ is healthy.
  • We fear carbohydrates (South Beach Diet ruined us) because we don’t know the difference between a simple carb (bad) or a complex carb (good).
  • People don’t believe in ‘healthy fats’.
  • Our taste buds are too picky.  (Teach them differently)
  • We eat too large of portion sizes (Would you like to supersize that for $1.00 extra?)
  • We eat too much at one sitting (‘I feel stuffed!’)
  • We grew up being told to ‘clean your plate.’
  • Soda (no need to say anything more)
  • We are told to watch caloric intake vs. food choices.
  • We have NO IDEA how to prepare fresh fruit/veggies.
  • We seem to think our plates must be FULL of 4+ different food items at each meal.
  • ‘Gluten Free’ has taken on a life of its own.  (Hellooo carbs and sodium: processed foods).
  • Pretty packaging at the store tricks you into thinking it’s healthy.
  • Laws are getting stricter, but food marketers can make dog feces seem healthy if they word it right (tricky bastards).

Here are some very basic rules to think about when preparing meals or eating.

-Would my Great Great Grandmother recognize the food item on my plate?

-The closer to nature, the better.

-Have a plate of fresh cut veggies at each meal.

-“Low Sugar/Low Fat” = Chemical Shit Storm

-Review your daily food intake…. Are you missing something?  If Yes, eat it at dinner!

-Drink Water.  It’s cheap & it’s good for you.  End of story.

-Plan ahead.  Meal prep is key.  Even if it’s just thinking about what you are going to make for dinner.

-Make SURE there is a protein source at each meal/snack.

-Make sure your family meal has a protein and veggie/fruit at mealtime.  Green Bean Casserole doesn’t count…. I’m talking steamed, roasted, raw, boiled.

-Your kids will live just fine if they don’t eat pasta & cereal 3+x/week.

-Just because YOU ate it as a kid & turned out just fine doesn’t mean they will!  Today’s world and ingredients are far different than when we grew up!  And….. who’s to say you turned out ‘just fine?’  You never know when diabetes, a colon disease, or worse is waiting around the corner.   If you still have trouble eating well……. For goodness sake, try a healthy meal replacement.  (Nope….slim fast is not one of them).  I highly recommend Shakeology because it has super foods and is nutrient dense.  Do you know what that means?  It means, even if you screw up and don’t get all your vitamins/nutrients in for the day, it’s got you covered. You’ve seen me preaching about the new food/fitness program called the ’21 Day Fix.’  It will help you with ALL the problems above….. in as little as 3 weeks.  Think you will starve?  THINK AGAIN!  It clearly lays out how many containers of which food group you should be eating each day.  The book helps you figure out how many of each containers and that’s ALL you worry about.  You won’t miss a single food group during the day, and you will learn portion control!  You can still have chocolate too…… because I think it’s more of a habit than craving to say “I need something sweet’ after a meal. No Calorie Counting!! No Weight Watcher Points!! No weighing food! No strict food plans!! You can still eat at restaurants!! >>>>>>>Baseline price is $60 for the program!!! <<<<<< So…. To paraphrase = stop ‘thinking’ you are eating well and feeding your family well and simply learn the real truth!  Stop obsessing about those pesky little calories!!  If you eat ‘clean’ – you don’t need to worry about those numbers! Healthy Weight Loss Strategy

eat clean, train dirty

Dieting.  Such a happy word!!  Cross that out….. Ugh….. doesn’t that word put a bad taste in your mouth right away??  Are you thinking ‘broccoli & fish’ for every meal?  I hate that word with a passion.
However, it’s the best word to describe changing your eating habits and it gets a bad rep thanks to fad diets.

Dieting to lose weight evokes a strong counteraction by the body to conserve energy.  When you start a diet, one of the means to weight loss involves eating fewer calories.  This acts as an alarm & signals the body t prepare for a future starvation state, something your body is extremely efficient at protecting against.  You will read some articles that contradict this thought process….. but I firmly believe it.

To counter the decrease in calorie intake & keep you alive, the body conserves energy by slowing down the resting metabolic rate or number in which your body burns calories throughout the day.  A slower metabolic rate results in fewer calories burned than normal, which conserved energy but also may allow more fat to be stored.  A drop in metabolic rate is one of the toughest obstacles for dieters to overcome.  Check out what happens… this may have happened to you:

  • > Start a diet & eat fewer calories.
    > Lose a little weight… or maybe a lot pending your starting size.
    > The body starts to signal starvation & the metabolic rate slows and fewer calories are burned.
    > Energy is conserved and you don’t have the energy to power through a workout, maybe get tired more quickly, grumpy, and the body starts conserving fat.
    >  You gain some weight back.  OR….. eat normal for a couple of days and the # on the scale jumps up.

What does the body start to use for energy when starved?  PROTEIN.  What’s protein?  MUSCLE.  What burns more calories at rest in the body?  MUSCLE.  Do you want the body to burn muscle?  NOOOOOOO!!!!! Here are some tips to fight against a slower metabolic rate and preserve muscle.  Many ‘body builders’ have an uncanny way of building muscle & losing fat.  Through my Sports Nutrition course, I’ve learned that Body Builders have some of the BEST diets and discipline over other athletes/people.  Yes… they workout hard & hit the weights hard with little cardio…. more than likely they are doing explosive cardio vs. long sustained sweat sessions.
But…their ‘diets’ are spot on in regards to carbs/proteins/healthy fats.  Maybe we should make an effort to mimic more of their food plans than sprinkling magic dust on our food for weight loss.
Here’s some strategies they use that are very effective.

  • Eat more protein.  Add a lean protein-source to each meal/snack.  Think: non-animal protein.  (beans, nuts, vegetarian burger, cottage cheese, cheese, milk, Greek yogurt, protein bars, protein shakes).
  • Drink a protein shake in the afternoon between lunch and dinner…. which is usually the second longest fast of the day after sleeping.  (Shakeology is NOT marketed as a ‘protein shake’ but with 16+ grams of protein, pre/pro-biotics, digestive enzymes, and superfoods….. it makes a great snack and gives you energy to power through the afternoon.)
  • Add resistive/strength training to your workout!!!!  Not sure how to do this or want a program to do at home?  Contact me at: Bashford.Lisa@yahoo.com

Don’t forget……. Muscles is a GREAT weapon in the fight to lose weight.  Don’t skimp on that part of your workout and don’t be a ‘cardio queen’ everyday!!  No sense in being hungry and running on a treadmill for an hour to lose weight when you don’t have to!  And… it doesn’t work anyways!!
Not wanting to leave the house on cold mornings & go to the gym?  Get an amazing workout at home…. I do every day!  Check out your options at www.beachbodycoach.com/LisaBashford

Finding & letting go of the past – Emotional Eating

417364_3502890732669_1283745536_33549233_1426158866_n

If you are following my blogs because you want some inspiration, motivation, healthy advice, or just like the way I write (awe)…. head’s up! Summer is on its way and it’s time to chin up and work dirty to get the summer body you want!
When you sweat, remember that is your fat crying because it’s LEAVING and NOT COMING BACK!!
I need some serious dedication from you this week. I need you to dig deep, get outside of your comfort zone, and mentally get prepared for change.  But, how can you truly prepare when you can’t let go of the past?
Much of our weight problems stem from our past experiences and emotions. Much of our emotional eating is the same way – we learned years ago that food makes us feel better. It comforted us during down/sad times and we celebrate with food too. However, we now know that the same food that comforts us, also ruins us. It hurts our bodies which lead to broken spirits and depression. Eating that dessert or second helping of gravy & potatoes may feel great while it’s happening, but I promise it will lead to feelings of guilt and frustration not including a possible upset stomach. Emotional eating is tough. WE ALL suffer from it and it takes discipline not to reach for the Girl Scout Cookies when feeling tired, sad, or giddy (I have felt a lot of giddy the past week).
Your challenge over the next 3 days is to do some self-examination. Nope…not the breast/testicular kind, although that is important, but the tough, deep kind. Spend a few minutes alone and really think about what drove you to eat poorly and turn to food for comfort. What happened in your life that caused you to gain weight? What stresses currently cause you to turn to food?  You didn’t gain weight because you just got lazy. There’s more to it than that and sometimes it can be painful to face. There is a deeper reason.

Let me explain my reason…… I have been an athlete ALL MY LIFE.  I had a lot of success in high school in Volleyball, played intramural in college and now on a co-ed league team.  I was the starting softball pitcher and played Basketball also.  I was always fit, had nice abs, and a strong build.  I love sports (Go UC) and am very competitive.  Then, I decided it was time to have a baby.

I had a premature baby (32 weeks) and spent the first 5 weeks of his life sitting beside his glass crib looking at him and praying he would live. I would grab a black raspberry smoothie from Zestos on my way home from the hospital and fast food because I was too tired to cook anything.  During that time, I also mildly dislocated my hip and was on crutches. Talk about bad luck!  Then, when my son came home, he was on heart rate monitors and all I wanted to do was hold him in my arms. I would hold him and eat quick foods just to fill my belly. After his first year, I got back on track again (to some degree) and then wanted another baby. CLASSIC, right?  I got pregnant 2 more times, and miscarried both of those babies. The second miscarriage was a partial molar pregnancy and I miscarried at 12 weeks. TALK ABOUT EMOTIONAL!! For the next 6 months, I had blood tests on a regular basis making sure that the D&C was successful and that no tissue was left behind that could turn to cancer inside my body. It was a long 6 months, but once I was cleared to get pregnant again….I easily got pregnant for the 4th time. Once again, I was high risk and placenta previa…..started symptoms of pre-term labor at 30 weeks, (I was terrified to say the least) but with the help of my doctors I was able to carry baby to 38 weeks. And, I now have a healthy boy and girl.  My youngest is 5 and I started working hard to get back on track about 3-4 years ago.  I wanted my body back. I began running and then needed more strengthening, but didn’t want to join the gym. I tried that when Jacob was 2 and wasn’t pleased with the daycare at the local gym. That’s when my friend said she was doing P90X and Shakeology and loved it. SO…I signed on as a coach because I didn’t want to pay full price for either product (they didn’t have challenge packs back then). I started the programs, found some success and people started asking me what I was doing. Then, I met a guy at a Christmas party, who was recovering from knee surgery and he wanted to lose weight also. We began challenging each other (we are a bit competitive) and before I knew it, I had lost 15 pounds and he lost 50. (Darn those men, always losing weight fast!) I started taking running more seriously, and being a PTA, I knew that I needed strengthening too (my knees and hips started to hurt) but was burnt out on P90X, so needed a new program. Thank goodness for nice discounts because that led me to Insanity > P90X2 > Les Mills Pump> Les Mills Combat!! I still have 10 pounds I want to lose. I’m on a mission before summer gets here! (I want my abs back!)
Anyways…that was/is my journey. I am WAY more educated about food choices now, so that helps me to make better decisions for myself and my family. When I think about those times, my bad food choices and the heartache during that time…my eyes leak. The pain of those miscarriages doesn’t go away. I pray for those babies daily and am grateful for the ones I am raising. I am working very hard at teaching my children the importance of health, fitness, and working hard to achieve goals all while making it fun.  I am now studying sports nutrition and will soon be certified (need to finish a few papers!). I coach others towards better health & fitness also…..and am a sponge when it comes to nutritional/exercise information, so I have plenty to offer.  If I don’t know the answer….I will find it.
Your goal is to deeply self-examine your past and recognize what it’s done to your body and then leave it in the past. It’s time to move forward and make a new you. You can’t move forward until you deal with the past. Otherwise, it will always be there….waiting on you.  And those bad habits will return, you will face those fears/worries again & make poor food choices all in hopes of finding comfort.  Then, you will look in the mirror and be angry at yourself. (Been there….done that).

I am physically stronger and can run longer than I could pre-children, even though I have yet to hit my personal goal.  But, I will hit it.  And I will rock those cute summer clothes.  It doesn’t matter that I’m a Mother – I can still look classy/cute in the summer….but this year I’m going to be the soccer/baseball Mom with the muscles too.  (Wink).
